about

Here's a bunch of remixes I did under my old Winter Son alias for other great artists.

They all have their own little story behind them and here's a little insight into my approach for each remix...

Mildew - Lucy is an INCREDIBLE artist and great friend (absolutely worth checking out lucyclaire.bandcamp.com/music) and this was my first remix as Winter Son. I was really into this grainy/worn sound in house music and wanted to make everything super vintage, and Lucy's remix stems gave me a huge opportunity to experiment with this approach. Most of what you hear is her original sounds through fx and I added a bassline and a 707 drum machine beat to keep everything driving.

Saturn - I decided I wanted to try a remix that wasn't focused on beats and that purely revolved around melody and harmony, so when I was asked to work on this track I took the opportunity. I remember when I handed it in the label were super happy as it wasn't a general house/techno version.

Flowers - Sergio (My Flower) has been a friend of mine for many years and he's a brilliant producer and DJ. We've worked together a few times on releases (I released quite a bit of his stuff on my Soundtracking The Void label) and he's really into that deep atmospheric techno sound. I really like the piano chord sound I've added in this and it's also got a pretty monstrous bassline if you crank those speakers up.

Moondancer - Ah, I've just realised that THIS was my first Winter Son remix! I actually think it was also the first piece of music I made with the Winter Son name attached. Anyway, it was a really cool experience and I still remember a lot of this session. I had some really cool bits of kit to use included a Juno 106 synth and TR-808 drum machine. I remember that the label came over to hear it in production and they were really surprised with what I'd done as I was a total newbie and I think they thought I'd mess it up!

Pinto - This was made on one of those ultra hot Summer days in a TINY box studio I was working out of. I was staying with my dad for a short while and set up in a storage room in his house. I couldn't get my mixes to sound good, which is why it sounds a bit... 'harsh' in places (I think?!?!?). Anyway, I wanted to make something with a huge drop and almost got it right.

Earthquakes - I made this one with my good pal Jozef K and it was our first remix together as a duo. We wanted to go for something along the lines of 'epic-trance-atmospheric-banger'.

Behind Doors - This was around the time I got super into acid techno and wanted to make something that would fit on the L.I.E.S. label! I had a TB-303 synth clone and made a really weird pattern on it and had an attempt at going a bit crazy with my drum programming.
