Following on from 'Studio Tests Volume 1 (Strega)' I present here to you Volume 2 in the Studio Tests series!
I'm a huge fan of Kayla Painter's music and when I saw she'd released a sample pack on Bandcamp I knew I'd have to make an entire EP with it.
Here's four tracks and a live session produced using sounds & audio ONLY from Kayla's sample pack. It's amazing to hear the results you can get from a great set of original and creative sounds.
After I finished the EP I filmed a live improv/jam of the track 'Death Does Not Concern Us', which you can see here with short intro about the EP concept and more about how everything is put together (as usual with my Studio Diary videos). You can also see my Ableton session screen in detail and the hardware FX I'm using...

I've been really getting into the idea of making music with a single sound source, whether that be a hardware piece of equipment or a software collection or even a single idea/thought process, so I thought Kayla's sample pack would be an awesome next step in my Studio Tests series.
The pack is a collection of weird and wonderful sounds ranging from recordings of hydrophones, glitchy vocals and spacey pads, so I had a plenty to play around with and dig into. Also, the sounds are quite long in length (some are over 30secs), which gave me a lot of scope to stretch them out and loop them. For me, when I'm working with a sample pack or sound set I go for the more unusual textures and noises I haven't heard before and are difficult to come across.
I started demoing each sound to see how it could inspire me to go into a certain direction and before I knew it I had four tracks in the works using only the sample pack audio and a few FX. I spent some time recording everything through my tape machine and guitar pedals to add plenty of dirt in true Sulk Rooms style and I found I gravitated towards the hydrophone textures on pretty much every track!
Stand by for another session of Studio Tests soon!
