about

Here's a bunch of demos from my 'unfinished' archive that never managed to make the final cut and be transformed into full tracks that I was happy with.

I make music almost every day and tend to work quite quickly, so I produce a crazy amount of ideas and sketches to get me started on how a certain track should be progressing.

I usually start producing a track by jamming a few rough ideas that get me in the right frame of mind or mood and then start my final idea from scratch or take one or two sounds from these initial demos. I learned this from composing for film/TV/commercials were I tend to do 'passes' of each piece of music. Essentially this is writing something, stopping, deleting it all and then starting again, with each 'pass' adding something new or fleshing out the direction more. I find it keeps things interesting and you don't get too attached to what you're writing and letting your ego take over!

Here's a little bit about each track in this selection...

Slow Acid - this was built around a slow moving acid line and some really cool saxophone sounds I found and looped. I LOVE the music of Recondite and I think the inspiration he has on my music is coming out here.

Acid Drone - this is clearly another Recondite moment for me! This was a demo/outtake from my 'Honley Civic Archives Volume 2' album that I didn't think fit the vibe of the record 100%. I love the sound of slow 'weeping' acid lines with weird drones underneath.

Bait (Demo Version) - a not-so-fully-fleshed-out version of my track 'Bait', which is from my album 'Bait', which is also from a film titled 'Bait'!!!
This is a near complete 'pass' of the opening music from the film, which then formed the basis of the finished track you can hear on the album. I felt this version was a little too ambient sounding for the film, but it was pretty much there, so I removed a few elements and added more of a pulsing rhythm.

Interlude - this formed the basis of a track titled 'Brave', which was released in 2015 under the name Jozef K + Winter Son (it's on YouTube and streaming etc). I've made a lot of music with Jozef K (who is also my production partner in Bluematter) and this interlude is me playing guitar and him playing a Juno 106 synth with a few vocal samples underneath it all.

Dark Ambient Jungle - a short demo for a potential Bluematter track. This was produced in the same session as the 'Blankness' EP, but we didn't manage to get the right vibe for this particular tune. It has some really interesting bits towards the end however, with a little chaos within the vocals and drums.

Slow Acid (Drums Version) - another 'pass' of the 'Slow Acid' track, but this time with added drums. I think this would've been the 4th or 5th version of this track and it was definitely getting to a place were I was happy, but ultimately it didn't satisfy me! I'm quite critical with my own music and I have a tendency to put each track through a rigorous test in terms of what I'll accept as a good day's work, so I'm probably only happy with about 25% of what I produce! I think with this particular track it's a very near miss and maybe if I'd had another few hours on it I could've had popping, but who knows.

Enjoy! Maybe I'll do a 'Demos Volume 2' soon...
