Nic Brown The first couple of times I attempted to listen to ambient virtuoso Thomas Ragsdale's latest two-tracker was late at night after a punishing day and such was the sense of enfolding tranquility exuded by its simple piano melody and judicious use of field recordings, I was deeply asleep before "All Men Have Limits", twas barely half way through. Determined to hear both pieces in sequence, I donned my headphones during daylight hours and for all the blissful repetition of "All Man Have Limits", there's something decidedly menacing about the title track. Put it this way, had I been awake, looking for something unpleasant lurking under the bed would have been at the very bottom of my list of priorities . Favorite track: All Men Have Limits.

about

‘All men have limits. They learn what they are and learn not to exceed them. I ignore mine’ - ‘Knightfall’, 1993.

Visions of decaying cities, shadowy figures and lost hope, Blüdhaven is an EP littered with easter eggs for anyone eager enough to delve deeper into its atmosphere.

My first new music since ’Dear Araucaria’ I become absorbed deep into the heart of darkness. I've exchanged looped guitar and piano for synths, drum machines and found sounds, seeing a departure from the blissful ambience from the majority of my previous work.

Recorded in Manchester and North Lincolnshire, with field recordings captured in locations as far removed as North Yorkshire and Kuuminainen, Finland, the EP is set to a landscape of hidden illusion.

Both ‘All Men Have Limits’ and ‘Blüdhaven’ focus on slow building atmospheres, reverb drenched classic analogue synths and chest crunching sub bass, all wrapped in recorded layers of forgotten caves, deep forests and what seemed to be never ending rain. ‘All Men Have Limits’ evokes a tense backdrop with intertwining arpeggios and conquering piano chords, whilst ‘Blüdhaven’ is reminiscent of a dystopian world of chaos.

My influences on this EP include John Carpenter, Ben Frost and Nils Frahm, taking an organic approach to producing and composing with subtle elements of electronica and ferocious distortion.

‘Blüdhaven’ will be released via This Is It Forever on CD, complete with artwork postcards specially designed and hand drawn for the project. Each CD wallet is hand stamped twice: once with a bat and once with the title.
